It all seems like it came out from a movie script written for the ultimate movie about pandemics. There are very few things that can be as important and as relevant as our health. We are all looking to ensure that we can be in the best possible shape. We know this is essential in order to be able to handle the challenges of life.

When this pandemic began in China, no one ever imagined that it would become something that would affect the entire world. We saw how people in Wuhan would have to stay inside their homes for a long time. We all saw this on TV and we felt it was a distant problem. A problem that would never become ours, but we were wrong.

It’s easy to remember times when we would watch news from China and we would see people wearing masks to every location.  People wearing masks at the supermarket and people wearing masks in places that seemed like an exaggeration. Then, we would even see people wearing these masks as they walked down the street.

This seemed like an alternate reality that never managed to hit home. It always felt distant, it never felt like it was about to hit us like a ton of bricks. This was the main reason why we always felt ok with seeing those news and not feeling threatened.

The spread of the pandemic and the bartending world collapse

We remember the day with people requesting bartenders near me and bartending services Los Angeles would. This was the kind of thing that reminded us of the fact that bartending was a very profitable profession.

For many bartenders, the biggest concern was that they would not be able to handle every request. It became an issue of deciding which jobs to take and which ones to decline. Something that is never easy as rejecting jobs could always mean losing potentially long term customers.

The day that covid arrived in the western world was a day that we will never forget. There is no question that watching this on TV feels very different from reality. This had already happened a few years ago with H1N1 and eventually everyone forgot about this and saw that it wasn’t a serious issue.

With covid, we started to realize that this was no longer someone else’s problem. People started flooding hospitals, and deaths caused by the virus started to become more common. Things went from hearing about someone passing away in a different state. To find out that someone we knew died of the disease.

This is not what we expected when we saw it in the news. It truly became something much bigger than what we would have ever imagined. Anything that related to selling things to people in a physical location had started to lose customers. The lockdowns became the biggest issue with this situation as they made it harder for most small business ventures to even survive the lockdowns.

Bartending started to feel like a lost cause

Bartending has the tendency to be the type of job that you can take all night at a single club. With that said, it could also be the kind of job that you only do a few times a week and you earn a lot of money from those specific days. 

Regardless of what was your case, being a bartender had gone from a stable independent job, to a completely unrequested profession. This could easily become the most important and relevant issue. One that had many bartenders looking for new ways to earn a living. Even the very best in this business had to start looking for alternatives.

The job went from high profit to nonprofit at all, it was truly scary to see how things happened. To see a job that seemed to be so highly requested, to something that felt that it had no value at all in any location. The truth is that this felt like a particularly serious blow to the bartending world, but there were other industries that had even more problems.

Bartending has turned into something that felt similar to those days when parents would tell their kids not to become musicians. Now it felt like it was bartenders as a whole that became the most unfortunate profession during the pandemic. A large number of jobs lost in every possible niche is no exaggeration, but there was no comfort in knowing others suffered as much as the bartender community did.

We needed to find a way back out and back into the process of creating all kinds of events. Think of it this way, we had to be able to do this somehow in order for bartending to survive. Unlike many other professions, a bartender needs a bar and all requires ingredients to work, this means that there is no digital substitute for this process.

The bartender that was unable to get a job for so long started to do work in industries that required no interactions with others. In many cases, taking jobs that paid much less than their expected rates, but was a necessity that truly affected everyone and turning opportunities away is never easy. 

Vaccines opened the way to some opportunity

When it all seemed to be lost, we finally started to see something giving hope to bartenders worldwide. It would be hard to say that all bartenders thought this would be the end of bartending, but it certainly felt that way at one point. The good news was that the vaccines gave people the opportunity to start being in crowded areas again. Once more and more people got their vaccines, the demand for bartenders for hire started to slowly rise back up.

This does not mean that things are back to normal now. There are many specific things that are still not the same as before. We still need to wear masks and we have to avoid getting too close to each other. In some areas, people are finally ditching the masks and they are acting normally, but spikes in hospitalizations seem to occur from time to time and this brings us back to a state of fear.

How some changes seem permanent and some new habits are here to stay

There is no way to say when the pandemic will be completely over. With that said, it is safe to say that we are not going to be the same as society once this pandemic ends. It will be a very difficult situation for all of us and we are going to need to be on our toes if we want to be able to handle this.

With that said, the profession of bartender is back in business, but we still have a long way to go before we regain that same level of engagement that we enjoyed before this all started.

This is a constant reminder that we need to set our goals and our expectations with patience. All as we learn how to handle this pandemic and we finally put an end to it at some point.
